Crossbow Fun Part 2

This post will address targets I use for the various crossbow and arrow launchers as mentioned in this post and Crossbow Fun Part 1. This first target (Black Hole) I actually got for another device, but quickly surmised it would not be sufficient for 400 fps bolts/arrows. The were punching through the back of the target, which had a tendency to damage the arrow/bolt vanes/fletching.

Target for up to 350 fps.

So, the search was on! This next target (Blackout 450+) is rated for 450 fps, so was adequate for the CenterPoint Sniper G4D.

Blackout 450 Plus.

Both targets were primarily for field points, although could be used for broadheads, at the expense of a greatly shortened service life. The first target could be used only on layered sides, without the coverings. However, even that would be soon shredded.

That led me to search for alternatives that could be used for broadheads, and would last longer than a few dozen shots. After looking at available commercial offerings, I quickly decided to make my own. This is information I found on the Internet, done by someone else. It seemed a low cost, easily constructed target. Most materials were acquired at Lowes Hardware, and are listed here.

  • Rubber Mulch
  • A bucket
  • White Duck Tape (Duct tape)

For the cover, a empty feed sack was used, turned inside out. Below is the type of mulch used. Notice the word nugget.

Rubber mulch.

The bucket used depends on whichever size target is desired. Mine is about 18 x 24 inches, more or less. By packing the mulch in tightly, I managed to get almost three bags in the bucket. The feed sack is taped over the top and secured around the edges. The square in the center could be a small square of black duck tape. The beauty of this target is after each shooting session, white duck tape is used to cover the holes, restoring it to like-new condition.

Broadhead target.

Now, about that first target… I didn’t really mention directly what that target was for. So, I’ll save that for a future post.

Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ, and God Bless.
