Cooler Weather

Moringa Trees

We have now reached critical times! The weather has taken a turn for the worst, at least for Moringa sprouts! We have had several nights of close to freezing or below temperatures here in the high Desert of the Southwest. As shown, some sprouts seem to have bitten the proverbial dust because of the cold.

Wilted and frozen

Seems my attempt to keep the cold at bay is only partially successful. I installed two 40w infrared (IR) heat lamps, but it becomes apparent just two is not enough.

Infrared lamps

The ones closest to the two lamps are still surviving, but I don’t know if really cold weather will take its’ toll even on these two, as the lamps are not keeping the entire area (of the sprouts) warm enough.

Healthy so far

The one on the left in the above picture is the first one I transplanted to a larger pot. The larger volume of soil will absorb more heat and retain it longer than the ones still in little Styrofoam pots. The other sprouts, even some in large pots, are not doing well.

Mixed bunch at various health levels

The real solution leans toward more lamps, even though these experimental sprouts are still ‘hanging in there.’ Time will tell how many more will survive.

Leaning toward oblivion

I currently have no additional lamps to install, so, they are on their own for now. We pray the Lord will see to give us warmer weather. However, the cold season has only begun, so I don’t expect things are going to get much warmer for long. So, perhaps it’s time to expand the heat available in the near future. Wish us well and God Bless you all!
